Biography:

SMITH, George (1770-1860: BBA)

He was born at Huntly, Aberdeenshire, but the names of his parents are unknown. He moved to Aberdeen to work as a weaver and, for thirty years, was employed by Leys, Mason, and Co. which also employed James Cock (q.v.). He married and had children but records with the names and dates of his family members have not been located. In 1803 he joined Finlayson’s Fencibles, a volunteer army, and served as the fugleman. Aside from Cock, he also knew Alexander Robb, a deacon, and John Milne (q.v.). BBA states that some of Robb’s verse is included in Douglas Travestied; they are not identified, but Robb published a collection of his Poems and Songs in 1852. When his wife died, the elderly Smith moved to Glasgow to live with one of his sons and he died there. (BBA)
