SMART, James Francis (1784-1828: ancestry.co.uk)
He was baptised on 1 Aug. 1784 at Tidenham, Gloucestershire, the son of James Campbell Smart and his wife Frances Penelope Millington, who had married at St. Bride’s, London, in 1769. They lived at Penmoil Cottage, with picturesque views over the Wye and Severn. In 1801 he was articled for five years to Thomas Easton, a Bristol attorney who worked at the Court of the King’s Bench, London. He then returned to Bristol and married Harriot Rogers on 5 Aug. 1807 at St. Swithin’s, Walcot, Bath. They had at least three children. He returned to Tidenham (probably after his father’s death in 1814) and practised in Chepstow, about two miles away. His wife died in 1820. He printed by subscription at the Albion Press, Bristol, The Steam Packet (1823) with over a dozen local solicitors as subscribers. He died at Tidenham and was buried there on 21 Mar. 1828, aged 44.
