Biography:

SKINNER, Israel (1776-1848: ancestry.com)

The title-page of his one book--a verse history of the Revolutionary War composed for young people--indicates that he was an MD. It is not clear where he had his medical training, but he was born in Orange County NY to Kezia (Gustin) and Abner Skinner, one of six children. In 1804 he married Martha Patty Saulsberry (d 1783) in Deerpark, Orange Co. NY. They had eleven children, four of them born in Orange by 1813 but the remainder in Susquehanna County PA, where Israel bought a homestead in what is now Great Bend adjoining that of his brother Jacob (1778-1847) and Jacob's family of 13 children in what is now Oakland. There he both farmed and practised medicine. He died in Palmyra WI--possibly at the home of one of his sons, who settled there--and is buried in the Hillside Cemetery. (ancestry.com 23 Sept. 2020; R.
