Author: Sherenbeck, Henry

Biography:

SHERENBECK, Henry (fl 1794-1832)

No record of his birth has been found. He may have originally come from Plymouth or have been related to various Sherenbecks, a well-known Jewish family, who were jewellers and pawnbrokers there. He joined various freemason lodges in Chatham, Kent (Israel 1794, Antiquity 1814, Royal Marine 1820), and was recorded as a jeweller. In 1824 he was recorded as an optician and working jeweller in the High Street, Chatham. There is no burial record but he left a will, proved in 1832 which is likely to be his year of death. He engaged in amateur theatricals and achieved modest fame for his portrayals of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice and Sheva in Richard Cumberland’s The Jew in the years 1804-1817, with several appearances at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden.
