Biography:

SHEPHERD, Samuel (1701/2-85: DIB)

His surname is also spelled Sheppard. He was the son of John Shepherd, archdeacon in Limerick; his mother’s name is not known. He was educated in Limerick and entered Trinity College Dublin as a scholar in 1720. He graduated BA 1724 and MA 1727. He was ordained and his working life was spent as the vicar at Celbridge and Straffan in County Kildare. In 1730 he married Kitty Anyon; they had six children. He was chaplain to the Duke of Dorset (1731-36) and to the Earl of Chesterfield (1745-46) during their terms as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The Duke of Dorset made Shepherd prebendary of Donadea, County Kildare,  in 1754. Shepherd’s only other publication during his lifetime was a sermon in 1754 but his daughters, Elizabeth and Marianne, edited and published a collection of his sermons in 1790.
