Author: SHEPHERD, Henry

Biography:

SHEPHERD, Henry (fl 1779-80)

Nothing is known about this author although he may have been the Henry Shepherd who was born in London on 25 Oct. 1760 and baptised at St. James's, Piccadilly, on 11 Nov. His parents were George and Elizabeth Shepherd. It is just possible, given the content of his poems, that he was the Henry Shepherd who published an opera, The Orphans; or, Generous Lovers, in 1800. That man was a captain in the 49th Regiment of Foot and the proceeds from his publication--which was well-received by reviewers--were to go to the fund for the "Widows and Orphans of our brave countrymen who fell in Holland." But nothing is known for certain. (ancestry.co.uk 22 June 2025) SR
