Biography:
SHAIN, James C. (c. 1791-1843: ancestry.co.uk)
He was born on 21 Jan. 1791 (baptised 11 Feb.) at Perth, Perthshire, the son of Charlotte (Low) and Thomas Shain (or Shean). He was a teacher and taught English and Latin at a school in Perth, described by Drummond as a “Dotheboys Hall” in the Perth High Street. Shain lived at the same location and the ground in front of the school building was occasionally used for the town gallows. On 21 July 1813 he married Ann Burns and they were to have eight children. He died at Perth on 13 Nov. 1843 and was buried on 17 Nov. at Greyfriars, Perth. (ancestry.co.uk 25 Sept. 2020, 7 Oct. 2025; P. R. Drummond, Perthshire Poets [1873]) SR
