Biography:

SEMPER, John (c. 1807-48: findmypast.com)

In 1834, John Semper published both the Infant Scholar’s Guide to Knowledge listed here and an Infant Scholar’s Spelling Book in prose. He was at that time the master of the Clock-House Infant School on the King’s Road, Chelsea, London. The preface to the former explains that he had been using the verses for teaching in his own school and had so often been asked for copies that he decided to have them printed. Despite his unusual name, few public records have been found. He is probably the John Semper, son of William and Sarah Semper, who was baptised at Greetham, Lincolnshire, on 14 June 1807; married Elizabeth Bradley at St. Anne’s, Soho, on either 24 Aug. or 8 Sept. 1828, both being residents of the parish; and died on 17 Jan. 1848, aged 41 and a married man, having been a resident of John St., Tottenham Rd. There is a record for John Semper of Holborn in the 1841 census but he appears to have been a single man in lodgings; other census records under that name are for labourers in other parts of the country. No other publications are linked to his name. (ancestry.com 7 Oct. 2024; findmypast.com 7 Oct. 2024) HJ
