Biography:

SEARS, Reuben (1778-1846: ancestry.com)

The son of Sunderland Sears and his wife Mary Andrews (or Andrus), he was born in Ballston NY, graduated from Union College in Schenectady NY in 1798, and became a Presbyterian minister. His first church was in Hudson NY but when his health became a problem, about 1815, he returned temporarily to Ballston where he preached "during periods of vacancy" 1815-16 and again 1829-31; he appears also to have been busy as the publisher of a few miscellaneous titles (schoolbooks, fiction) by arrangement with a printer in the village. Later postings were in Dracut MA and New Scotland NY. He married Sarah Catherine ("Sally") Fitch--in what year is not certain--and they went on to have at least three children. Sears is said to have been a vocal campaigner against slavery and in favour of temperance, but does not appear to have published on those subjects.
