Biography:

SCOTT, William (1781-c.1861: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born at Old Deer, Aberdeenshire, and was likely the son of Elizabeth (Strath) and John Scott. Scottish Notes and Queries states that he was trained to be a tailor but worked as a grocer. However, his occupation in the 1841 and 1851 Census records is given as tailor. He is said to have gone to America after the 1832 publication of his book; if so, he had returned by 1835 when he married Helen Anderson. There is no record of him after 1851 but Scottish Notes and Queries gives his death date as 1861. His poems are in the Buchan dialect—that is, the Aberdeenshire dialect.
