Author: Saunders, James M.

Biography:

SAUNDERS, James M. (fl 1834)

Apart from a broadside "Ode" of about 1832 doubtfully attributed to him, the Collection of Miscellaneous Pieces published in Philadelphia in 1834 provides the only record that has been found of Saunders. It is dated from Bristol College, near Bristol in Bucks County PA--an Episcopalian college for prospective ministers that combined study with manual labour. The College opened in 1833 but closed for lack of funding in 1837. Saunders may have been a student there, or possibly a junior teacher, but he was not one of the senior faculty and does not appear ever to have been ordained. HJ
