Author: Sargent, Winthrop

Biography:

SARGENT, Winthrop (1783-1808: WBIS)

An elder brother of Lucius Manlius Sargent (q.v.) and a member of the prominent, wealthy Boston Brahmin family that nurtured more than one famous Winthrop Sargent, he died before his 25th birthday. He graduated from Harvard in 1803 but may already have been in poor health: the Houghton Library holds an eight-page poem in manuscript, "A Poem on Taste," that was meant to be read at a meeting of Phi Beta Kappa about 1800 but was not, on account of illness. Death notices do not indicate the cause of death. (ancestry.com 1 Sept. 2020; Harvard University Library catalog; John H. Sheppard, Reminiscences of Lucius Manlius Sargent [1871]) HJ
