Biography:

SANDERS, Maria Ruth (1791-1865: ancestry.co.uk)

She was born in London on 6 June 1791 and baptised at St. George’s, Bloomsbury, on 11 Sept., the daughter of William and Elizabeth Sanders. Her mother’s maiden name is not yet known. Nothing is known of her education or employment. Her first volume, Original Rhymes (1833), with a short list of mostly London subscribers, contained occasional verse and sonnets, along with the Wordsworthian “The Cumberland Beggars”; “India, A Sketch”; and “A Vision of London.” Her later volume, also Original Rhymes(1851), dedicated to Rev. Henry Stebbing (q.v.), contained longer Spenserian historical tales with extensive notes. She appears to have spent most of her life in Bloomsbury, living on small annuities, but had spent some time at Leamington Spa Library in her youth and possibly had relatives in the area. She may also have lived at various times at Muswell Hill, George Street Hanover Square, Brighton, Cheltenham, and Tonbridge, (Original Rhymes[1833], 136-7; 1851, 58-9). She appears not to have married. By 1861 she was a boarder living at 3 Regent Square, Bloomsbury, where she died of breast cancer, aged 74, and was buried at All Souls, Kensal Green, leaving an estate of under £100 with the request that her friend, Rev. Henry Stebbing, perform the burial service. (ancestry.co.uk 24 Sept. 2024; findmypast.co.uk 24 Sept. 2024; Stainforth; Globe 25 May 1865; GRO death cert; NPC 1865) AA
