Author: Ruschenberger, Mrs.

Biography:

RUSCHENBERGER, Mrs. (fl 1832)

She is almost certainly Ann Ruschenberger (1785-1883), born Ann Waithman in New Jersey, who married Peter Ruschenberger and had a famous son, the naval surgeon, traveller, naturalist and writer Dr. William Samuel Waithman Ruschenberger (1807-1895). They were farming near Bridgeton NJ when he was born, but they moved to Philadelphia and their son was educated at the University of Pennsylvania. "Mrs. Ruschenberger" of Philadelphia was the author of three plays, only one of them in verse: The Bold Scotch DragoonBienna: or The Man of Kent and the Maid of Cadiz, and Henry and Eleanora. It is just possible that there were other Ruschenbergers in the city, but this seems the most likely candidate. (Dr. Ruschenberger did not marry until 1839.) Ann Waithman Ruschenberger lived to be 98, died in Philadelphia, but was buried in the Old Broad Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Bridgeton. (ancestry.com 14 Aug. 2020; Appleton)
