Biography:

ROWLES, Charlotte (1796-1876: ancestry.co.uk)

She was born on 13 Mar. 1796 at Chard, Somerset, the eldest daughter of Samuel Rowles (1743-1820), the Baptist minister, and his wife Charlotte Weston (1763-1869) who had married 19 Nov. 1793 at Old Church St. Pancras. She was later rebaptised on 14 June 1824 at Stanwell, Poyle Chapel (Independent). She was a witness at her sister’s wedding in 1832, was  a frequent visitor at their home in Ross, Herefordshire, and is recorded in the Censuses 1841-1861. She published Nadaber (1829) with her sister Martha Rowles (later Smith) (q.v., 1804-1864) and, under her own name, Eastern Scenes (1835). Her death notice mentions an unnamed further volume but it has not been traced and is possibly a misreading of the 1867 Stainforth catalogue which listed her two known works along with Elizabeth Rowse (q.v.), Outlines (1808/1811/1833). The sisters dedicated their volume to James Montgomery (q.v.) who appears to have encouraged them with his usual generosity. She died at Bournemouth in Feb. 1876.
