Biography:
ROSS, Robinson C. (b 1799: findmypast.com)
He is almost certainly the Robinson C. Ross born to Hannah and Isaac Ross in Westerley RI on 6 Jan. 1799, but further information is scanty. His Hymns and Spiritual Songs, published in Connecticut in 1821 and his only published work, was a contribution to the New England branch of a recent evangelical movement known as the Christian Connection--a loose coalition of worshippers who had left the established Christian churches to rely on the Bible and reason alone. Ross may or may not have been one of their preachers for a time; he was not one of their leaders. He became a farmer in Hampshire County MA, settling finally at Enfield, where his name appears in the 1840 and 1850 US Census but not in 1860. (Enfield MA no longer exists: it was lost to the Quabbin Reservoir in 1940, with some remaining portions of the town annexed to neighbouring ones.) He must have married and had at least one child, since the death of a 14-year-old son at Enfield was reported in 1838, but the date of the marriage and the name of his wife are not known.
