ROSE, A. (fl 1784-87)
Three books of “entirely New” Valentine poems were printed by Thomas Sabine of London in 1784, 1785, and 1787. The title pages identify the authors as Mr. Turner of Norfolk, Mr Williams of Oxford, Mr. Manley of Middlesex, Miss Rose of Canterbury, Miss Lovejoy of York, and Miss Gray of Bristol. In each book the address to the reader is signed “J. Turner, A. Rose, &c.” but the poems themselves are not signed. The six authors are not otherwise known to have published verse and, without first names, it has been impossible as yet to identify them. Thomas Sabine (1738-1810) was an enterprising printer and bookseller with premises at 81 Shoe Lane, Fleet Street, London. (findmypast.co.uk 6 Dec. 2024)
