Biography:

ROOF, Rice (1786-1857: findmypast.com)

His background and parentage are unknown. When he published The Growing Village in Danbury CT in 1808, he made a point of announcing his birthdate and declaring that he himself had been born in just such a village. His Introduction hinted at hopes for further opportunities to display his knowledge of mankind, but in fact he became a carpenter with a well established business in New York City. He married a woman whose first name was Mary and had at least one daughter with her. He died in New York; funeral services were held at the home of his son-in-law, and he was buried in Somers NY.
