ROGERS, Daniel (1780-1839: ancestry.com)
He was born in New London CT, the son of William Rogers; the name of his mother has not been found. His Poem on Liberty (1804) was published while he was a student at Union College in Schenectady NY. He studied law and was called to the bar in New York. One further literary effort of 1818, a musical farce entitled The Knight of the Rum Bottle, had no successor, but while he engaged in legal practice he embarked on a different form of publication as a court reporter and editor from 1817 to 1822 of the New-York City Hall Reporter, which provided summaries of trials with "notes and remarks" by Rogers. He married Rebecca Conklin and had at least two children with her. He died at home in Cold Spring Harbor NY after "a short and severe illness"; the New York press described him as "for many years an esteemed member of the bar of this city." The New York Historical Society holds some correspondence and other papers. (ancestry.com 5 Aug. 2020; Commercial Advertiser [NYC] 23 Jan. 1817, 13 Jul. 1839) HJ
