Biography:
ROBINS, John (fl 1806)
A possible clue to the identity of this author is in the publication of what seems to be his only book in both Exeter and London. Perhaps he was the John Robins who was born in Exeter, Devon, to John Robins and his wife Sarah Edwards. They had married in St. Paul’s, Exeter, on 13 May 1781 and their son John was baptised on 22 Sept. 1782. That John Robins died in 1822 and was buried at St. David’s, Exeter, on 11 Oct. A review of Sensibility in CR could not have been encouraging to the young poet; it describes the poems as “of various merit, that is, some are bad and others very bad.” (ancestry.co.uk 9 Dec. 2024; CR 8 [1806], 102-03)
