REDI, Francesco (1626-1697: EB)

Born in Arezzo on 18 Feb. 1626, the Italian physician and poet is remembered for disproving the theory of spontaneous generation. Redi died 1 Mar. 1697 at Pisa. The radical journalist Leigh Hunt (q.v.), long an aficionado of Italian poetry (he learned Italian as early as 1799), translated Redi’s serio-comic poem Bacco in Toscana.
