REDI, Francesco (1626-1697: EB)

Born in Arezzo on 18 Feb. 1626, the Italian physician and poet is remembered for disproving the theory of spontaneous generation. Redi died 1 Mar. 1697 at Pisa. The radical journalist Leigh Hunt (q.v.), long an aficionado of Italian poetry (he learned Italian as early as 1799), translated Redi’s serio-comic poem Bacco in Toscana. Ditirambo … Con le Annotazoni (Firenze, 1685) as Bacchus in Tuscany, a Dithyrambic Poem, from the Italian. Hunt’s volume was published in London in 1825 by his elder brother, John (q.v.), and by John’s son, Henry Leigh Hunt. (EB 1 Jan. 2023) JC
