Author: Raupach, Ernst Benjamin Salomo

Biography:

RAUPACH, Ernst Benjamin Salomo (1784-1852)

The German dramatist was born 21 May 1784 at Straupitz, Silesia. Having studied theology at the University of Halle, he became a Lutheran preacher and then a professor of literature and history at St Petersburgh University. From 1822, he was an itinerant residing, variously, in Italy, Weimar, and Prussia. He gave up the ministry and academics for dramaturgy. His many plays—tragedies, comedies, and histories—popular during his lifetime, are now mostly forgotten. He died 18 Mar. 1852 at Berlin. The English translator of his verse drama The Daughter of the Air: A Mythic Tragedy, in Five Acts is unidentified.
