Author: Ramsay, A.

Biography:

RAMSAY, A. (fl 1796)

He has not been identified but he was not Allan Ramsay (1686-1758, q.v.), the Scottish poet, and his first name is not known. Likely he was trying to capitalise on Allan Ramsay’s fame by giving “A. Ramsay, late of Edinburgh” on the title page. The Dedication gives his surname as Ramsay but “The Author to the Reader” has Ramsey and describes him as “a poor unworthy writer, but of a renowned name.” As a young man he worked as a stonemason in the north of Scotland. One of the poems indicates that he was probably born in the 1720s.
