Biography:

PYKE, Edward (fl 1792)

Edward Pyke, V. D. M. (Verbum Dei Minister), a nonconformist preacher, published this one collection of hymns, some original and some selected, in Leicester in 1792. He explains in a preface that some of his own hymns that had been in circulation without his knowledge have been restored to their original form in this volume, and that he has taken the liberty of improving some of the poems composed by other writers. The Analytical Review was snide, observing that most of the hymns were “of equal merit,” for theology and versification, as the short stumbling sample chosen for quotation. Public records provide no reliable further identification. (ancestry.com 27 Nov. 2023; findmypast.com 27 Nov. 2023; Analytical Review 13 [1792], 525)
