Biography:

PURSHOUSE, Abraham (1754-1831: ancestry.co.uk)

Although there is a Southwark baptism record for an Abraham Pershouse born on 15 Nov. 1751, son of John Pershouse, ironmonger, and his wife Elizabeth, of Jacob Street, there is no reason to doubt the Pembroke College, Cambridge, entry of born, Southwark, 6 Jan. 1754, son of John Purshouse, iron merchant. A possible explanation for the discrepancy is an earlier infant death. He was sent to Christ's Hospital and Pembroke (BA 1777, MA 1780). He became Rector of Brabourne, Kent, in 1786 (a post he held until his death) and married Mary Thurston the following year at Willesborough, Kent. They had one daughter. Although his poem An Essay on Genius (1782) was on a central topic in eighteenth-century thought, he does not appear to have written anything else. There is a floorstone in St. Mary the Blessed Virgin, Brabourne, commemorating him and his wife who died in 1854. (ancestry.co.uk 12 Oct. 2020; CCed;  GM Aug. 1831, 186, Apr. 1854, 443) AA
