Biography:
PRYCE, John (fl 1830)
Only one work is associated with Pryce, the “Border Tale” Julia of Pallinsburn, privately printed in Manchester in 1830. It has an epigraph from S. T. Coleridge (q.v.) and is dedicated to a Lady Willson. It was announced in lists of new publications; no reviews have been traced. Pryce sent a copy to Walter Scott (q.v.) but was not one of his regular correspondents. His name, especially with variant spellings such as Price and Prise, is not unusual. The best match appears to be John Pryce Esq., of Moss Side, Manchester (and “late of York Place” nearby), who died on 14 Aug. 1846, aged 60 (suggesting a birthdate of c. 1786), and was buried in St. Peter’s churchyard. But he is not known to have been literary and no further information has been found about him. He might have been born in another part of the country. He is not to be confused with the Welsh John Pryce who had the same years of birth and death but no obvious links to Manchester, and who divided his time between Newtown, Montgomeryshire, Wales, and London, where he died and was buried.
