Author: Princeps, Elizabeth Louisa Slater
Biography:
PRINCEPS, Elizabeth Louisa Slater (fl 1820)
Despite her distinctive name, no public records have been found to identify her precisely. Her single book, a novel with a long poem (“The Pilgrim”) attached, was advertised repeatedly in newspapers of June-Aug. 1820 and was included in lists of new publications, but does not seem to have attracted any real reviews. In most of the announcements she is referred to as “Elizabeth Louisa Princeps” and Princeps, not Slater, does seem to have been her birth name. It is possible that she was the Elizabeth Princeps buried at Belford, Northumberland, aged 77, in 1874; another, buried at Leamington, Warwickshire, in the same year was 71, which would have made her only 17 at the time of publication.
