POW, William (fl 1789)
Although he is clearly identified on the title-page of his only known publication as “a chaplain of the Royal Navy” and although the work attracted several reviews--ranging from neutral to sarcastic—it does not seem possible to trace him in the public record. A clergyman of this name was sent from England to minister at St. James, Cape Fear, North Carolina, from 1748 to 1753, but it seems unlikely that the same man would have been a naval chaplain forty years later. There are a few births of sons with this name to fathers of the same name in England after the middle of the century but no reasons to link them to this book.
