Biography:
POULETT, W. H. (fl 1805-8)
Poulett’s attempt to excite compassion for the female victims of seduction, published in Bristol in 1805, is dedicated to the Prince of Wales (for his benevolence) and a shorter poem in the same volume, “Henry and Eliza,” to the Duchess of York. The author seems to have been well intentioned and well connected. It is possible that he was related to the Barons and Earls Poulett of Hinton St. George in Somerset, but he does not appear to have been a member of the immediate family. No convincing records of his birth, parentage, education, or death have been found and there are too many variant spellings of the name (Pollett, Powlett, Pawlett, etc.) to make a search practicable, especially in the absence of definite Christian names. Both “William” and “William Henry” appear in the Somersetshire family but not at the right times for this author.
