Author: Porter, Hugh

Biography:

PORTER, Hugh (1780-1865: Wikipedia)

He was a linen weaver who lived in Moneyslane, County Down. The Rev. Thomas Tighe—addressed as “T. T.” in some poems—edited his one volume of verse which was published by subscription.  No records have been found for his life or his death but Wikipedia gives dates of 1780-1865 based on his grave in Drumgooland. Many of his poems are in Ullans or Ulster Scots and the book includes a glossary. There is a modern edition of his poems. (Goodridge; A. Adams & J. R. R. Adams, The Country Rhymes of Hugh Porter, the Bard of Moneyslane [1992]; Wikipedia 30 Jan. 2023) SR
