Biography:

PIZEY, Susanna (b 1793: ancestry.co.uk)

She was born on 17 Feb. 1793 at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, the sixth of seven children of Robert Pizey (1757-1837), a shoemaker with premises in Abbeygate Street, and his wife Mary Catchpole (1759-1814), who had married in 1781. Her mother ran a school together with her daughters in Chequer Square. Susanna was baptised alongside her younger brother, Edward, on 5 Jan. 1798 at St. Mary’s, Bury St. Edmunds. Nothing is known of her education. At some point before 1815, probably after her mother’s death, various siblings moved to London. Her brother George married at St. Pancras in 1810, her eldest sister Elizabeth at St. Clement Danes in 1815, and her younger brother John Robert at Hammersmith in 1817. Poems (1817) was printed for her in Bloomsbury and sold in Bury St. Edmunds, and contained both London and Suffolk subscribers, including Margaret Price of Hammersmith, John Robert Pizey’s first wife. The poems themselves contain no clues to her identity. Thereafter there appears to be no further trace of Susanna Pizey. However, her brother John Robert Pizey (1791-1827), a London-Liverpool merchant who died in Buenos Aires, left his siblings £100 each, with her name recorded as Susan Pizey. This would seem to indicate that she was still unmarried at the time of writing the will (12 October 1824) but it is unlikely she was the Susan Pizey who married John Williams at St. Mary’s, Newington, Lambeth, south London, on 20 Aug. 1823. The witnesses, William Pizey (an uncle) and Mary Ann Pizey (possibly her sister-in-law who had married her brother, Edward, in Croydon, the previous year), provide some circumstantial evidence for a marriage but it was most likely her cousin (b 1795 to William and Esther Pizey). There are no good matches in the public record or newspapers for the death of a Susanna or a Susan Pizey.
