Biography:

PITMAN, John (1785-1864: ancestry.com)

Pitman's one and only verse publication was produced as a favour to his alma mater, Brown University, in his home city of Providence RI. His other publications are occasional addresses and orations, and legal judgments. He was the son of the Rev. John Pitman, a Baptist minister, and his wife Rebecca Cox. He graduated from Brown in 1799 and proceeded to study law, taking his practice to New York City (1806-7), Kentucky (1807-8), Providence (1808-12), Salem MA (1812-16), and Portsmouth NH (1816-20), before settling definitively in Providence. In 1812 he married Mary Talbot, also a native of Providence. They had nine children. From 1821 to 1824 he was the District Attorney for Rhode Island, then was appointed a judge in the District Court for the state. As the federal directory of judges puts it, his service was "terminated on November 17, 1864, due to death." He died in Providence and is buried there.
