PINGREE, William (1792-1863: ancestry.com)
Pingree was a farmer and a Methodist preacher; the modest “new compilation” of hymns published in 1826 is his only known literary work. The son of Ruth (Hoit or Hoyt) and Stephen Pingree, he was born on 16 Jan. 1792 in Manchester NH but had settled in Norway ME by 14 Oct. 1813 when he married Elenor (“Nellie”) Stevens (1790-1882), with whom he had seven children, six of whom grew to adulthood. One of the family histories on ancestry.com suggests that he “went into trade” later in life although the Census of 1850 records his occupation still as “farmer.” In 1860 he was living on the same farm with one of his sons in charge of the household and his own occupation given as “shoe-maker,” with his wife’s as “housekeeper.” He died in Norway on 28 Jul. 1863 and was buried in the Chapel Cemetery there. He is not to be confused with Captain William Pingree (1790-1862) of Denmark ME. (ancestry.com 23 Oct. 2023)
