Biography:

PIERCY, Richard (1718-97: ancestry.com)

Piercy appears to have published only two poems. They commemorate the deaths of celebrated ministers and are dedicated to their widows. Thomas Gibbons and John Fletcher (qq.v.)—the former an Independent minister and the latter an Anglican churchman with strong ties to the Wesleys—both died in 1785. Piercy himself was an Anglican, the son of Mary (Jackson) and Richard Piercy (“Peercy” in the record) baptised on 16 Oct. 1715 at Bedworth, Warwickshire, a market town near Coventry. In 1746 he was appointed schoolmaster at Bedford parish school; on 13 Nov. the same year he married (as “Peircy”) Mary Sanders (d 1758) at Bedworth, and they had at least one child, Richard. He was probably the Richard “Pierce” buried on 23 Mar. 1797 at Holy Trinity, Coventry. (ancestry.com 17 Oct. 2023; findmypast.com 17 Oct. 2023; CCEd 17 Oct. 2023) HJ
