Biography:
PICKERSGILL, Maria, formerly PRICE (1777-1857: ancestry.co.uk)
She was probably born in Stepney in 1777 although no baptism record has been traced. She married Henry William Pickersgill, later a portrait painter, on 8 July, 1805, at St. Andrew, Holborn. They had at least seven children with several also becoming artists. He painted portraits of William Godwin, Hannah More, Jeremy Bentham, William Wordsworth (qq.v.), and many others. Constable thought highly of him and also observed, “He has a clever wife, who manages all matters for him” (ODNB). They initially lived in Soho Square but later moved to Stratford place, Cavendish Square, with a further residence in Barnes. She published Tales of the Harem (1827) and a few contributions to the Annuals. She died 22 Sept. 1857 at Fern Lodge, Barnes, aged 80.
