Biography:

PICKERING, Henry (1781-1838: ancestry.com)

He was born in Newbury NY, the third son of Rebecca (White) and Timothy Pickering; his father was Washington's Secretary of War and Secretary of State. In 1801 the family moved to Boston. Henry became a successful businessman in Salem MA; after suffering a reversal in his fortunes about 1825, he tried to start again in New York City, but eventually settled for devoting his time to literature. He was a contributor to the Evening Post, among other ventures. He died, unmarried, "of apoplexy" in New York and is buried in Salem.
