PICKERING, Amelia (1747-1814: ancestry.co.uk)

She was baptised on 16 Jan. 1747 at All Hallows, London, the daughter of Joseph Pickering, an attorney, and his wife Abigail Frere. The Pickerings and the Freres were wealthy owners of land, plantations, and slaves in Barbados. Amelia Pickering published The Sorrows of Werter (1788) with almost 1000 subscribers, mostly from London and Bristol. Her obituary in the Gentleman's Magazine remarked on “the prosperous days of her youth” but observed that the “last thirty years of her life had been marked by misfortune.” She was buried at St. James’s, Bristol, on 29 Jan. 1814, aged 67.
