PEEBLES, William (1751-1826: ancestry.co.uk)
Satirised by Robert Burns in “The Holy Fair” as the Ayrshire minister whose “Common Sense has ta’en the road” and as “Poet Willie” in “The Kirk’s Alarm,” he was born at Inchture, Perthshire, to James Peebles and his wife, Agnes Millar, and baptised on 28 Dec. 1781. He was licensed in 1775 and ordained in 1778, becoming minister at Newton upon Ayr where he served until his death. He married Jean Hoome on 31 Dec. 1781; they had at least ten children. His other publications are sermons (1788 and 1794); for these he was awarded an honorary DD (university unknown). (ancestry.co.uk 30 June 2020, 23 Dec. 2024) SR
