Author: Peck, Jabez

Biography:

PECK, Jabez (1761-91: WBIS)

He was the son of Ruth (Willes) and Samuel Peck of Norwich CT. Because the family had moved to New Hampshire, he started university studies at Dartmouth but then transferred to Yale and graduated in 1784. He taught school on Long Island and then became a classics master at a school in New York City. In 1790 or '91 he married Nancy Rysam. The couple had a child together but he died after "a short indisposition" in New York. His play was written as a teaching tool, to foster "improvement in elocution, for a select number of students, at a public school" (Preface). (Dexter) HJ
