Biography:
PEARSON, Ann, formerly HENDERSON (1768-1839: findmypast.co.uk)
She was probably the Ann Henderson baptised on 8 Dec. 1768 at All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne, the daughter of William Henderson, a hoastman (loader and shipper of coal). Her mother’s name is unknown. She married William Fenwick Pearson (1768-1833), a Hexam surgeon and later coroner, on 16 May 1803 at nearby St. John Lee. There appears to have been no issue. He died in July 1833 and was buried at Hexam. The report of his death notes that he gave up practising and was “for a length of time in South America, and during several of the last years of his life, an inmate of the parish workhouse.” It is unclear why he went abroad or ended up in the workhouse or whether Ann accompanied him. On balance, she probably didn’t and it seems likely the publication by subscription of her two volumes was an attempt to raise funds for her old age. In The Grateful Remembrance (1816) she claimed she first wrote poetry in 1815. Miscellaneous Pieces (1834) was her third production, after Remembrance and her Rosina collection (1818). She died on 12 Jan. 1839, aged 70, and was buried at Hexam. (findmypast.co.uk 8 Aug. 2021; Newcastle Journal 3 Aug. 1833; Newcastle Courant 18 Jan. 1839) AA
