PATERSON, Thomas Hislop (1809-77: ancestry.co.uk)

Born in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, he was the son of Isabella (Hislop) and John Paterson (or Patterson); his father was likely a gardener. He was educated initially at the village school and later became a teacher at, successively, Gattonside, Fountainhall, Uphall, and Edrom. In 1837 he married Margaret Tait; they had six children. In 1842 the family moved to Fife where he opened a school at Stirling Place. Five years later they moved to Ladhope Bank where he established a school. Janet died sometime after the 1851 Census and in 1854 he married Helen Bearup; they had two sons and two daughters. He suffered from ill health towards the end of his life and in 1876 he resigned from teaching and his school was closed. He was buried at Ladhope. His two other publications are The Sinner’s Friend (1848) and Trials by the Way to Zion (1857). (ancestry.co.uk 10 Aug. 2020; Robert Hall, History of Galashiels [1898])
