Author: PANTON, Mary

Biography:

PANTON, Mary (fl 1815)

The identification of the author of Eloise and Other Poems as Mary Panton seems to originate with Scottish Women Poets of the Romantic Period but the entry on Panton admits that nothing is known about her. The book is dedicated to Lady Ann Johnstone Hope, who subscribed for ten copies. The author’s introduction explains that many of the poems were composed when “illness and sorrow greatly depressed the spirits of the writer.” The list of subscribers includes many from Hampshire, some from Oxford and Cambridge colleges, and some from Scotland. Nothing more is known.
