Author: PAINE, Thomas
Biography:
PAINE, Thomas (fl 1820)
Few verifiable facts have been found to identify this author but it is certain that he was not the Thomas Paine (1737-1809, q.v.) of revolutionary fame, despite the attributions in some library catalogues. In the Preface to his only known publication, a tragedy on the Homeric theme of Andromache (1820), he asks the reader’s indulgence for faults in the work, which was “written under a most heavy oppression of the blood upon the brain,” and promises that his next work, a poem shortly to be published, will be better. No such poem appeared and it is tempting to suppose that he was either the Thomas Paine aged 42 buried at St. Marylebone, London, on 10 May 1822 or the Thomas Paine aged 55 buried there on 5 Aug. 1822. There are however all too many other possibilities. (ancestry.com 7 Aug. 2023; findmypast.com 7 Aug. 2023)
