Biography:
OWEN, Elizabeth (1787-1836: findmypast.com)
Elizabeth Owen was born on 26 June 1787 at Cheekpoint, County Waterford, Ireland, one of at least eight children of Captain Thomas Owen (d 1813), who had emigrated from Milford, Wales, to be the agent for the post-office packet boats there, and his wife Jane (d 1811), whose maiden name is not known. Only four of the children lived to maturity. They were Quakers and the children were perhaps educated at the Quaker school set up at Newtown in 1798; the family home was Fairymount, a fine house at Cheekpoint. Elizabeth never married. Besides the deaths of several siblings and of her parents, she suffered as an adult from a serious but unspecified “affliction” that affected her health. Nevertheless, her poems celebrate family, friendships, “our Emerald shores,” holidays in Wales and London, and special occasions such as rural fêtes. There is a recurrent maritime theme, generally laments for deaths at sea. Elizabeth was the only member of the younger generation of her family who stayed with the Quakers. One brother and one sister were “disowned” for marrying outside their religion and the remaining brother “absented” himself in 1825. Elizabeth, however, died in the faith on 13 Dec. 1836 and was buried at Cheekpoint. Poetical Recollections was her only published work.
