OLIVER, William (1752-1826: findmypast.com)
A misprint—MDIIIXI for MDCCCXI—on the title-page of the only known literary work of William Oliver of Beaminster has a tale to tell. Oliver was born and died in Beaminster, Dorset. The only son of Elizabeth Mintern and John Oliver, who had married at Netherbury, Dorset, on 31 Dec. 1738, he was baptised at St. Mary’s, Beaminster, on 17 May 1752. He served as the town printer, with premises on the market-place, from some time before 1788 until his death. On 31 Jan. 1773 he married Mary Daniel (1748-1817) at St. Mary’s, where they went on to have six children baptised between 1775 and 1789 (and there may have been more births). Their third son, Isaac (b 1787), went into business with his father and eventually succeeded him in the market-place. Isaac was the printer of the 1811 Sacred Poem. William Oliver died at Beaminster and was buried on 4 Jan. 1826 at St. Mary’s like his wife before him. In the record of burial, 1826 is given as the year of death but it might have occurred at the very end of 1825.
