Author: Oliver, Rowland

Biography:

OLIVER, Rowland (fl 1820)

The Prestoniad, which deals with the 1820 election in Preston, Lancashire, is the only work claimed by Rowland Oliver. Although the name does appear, even with the “Rowland” spelling, in a few contemporary baptisms, notably two in Wales in 1783 and 1785, it is more than likely that the author was using it as a pseudonym. “A Roland for an Oliver” is a phrase used of repartee or of an exchange of blows; a farce with the title A Rowland for an Oliver was regularly performed  at Covent Garden in London in 1819-20.
