Biography:

NUTT, Thomas (1780-1852: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born in the Isle of Wight and baptised at Newport on 9 Feb. 1780, along with two sisters, Harriett and Sarah, the children of James Nutt. His mother’s name is not recorded but she may have been the Rebecca Hyde who married James Nutt, peruke (wig) maker, on 1 Apr. 1771, at Saint Maurice, Winchester. James Nutt is recorded as the father of two elder daughters, Rebekah (sic, 1773-1813) and Sophia (1774-1850). His early education is not known and his relatively late entry to Balliol College Oxford (matric. 1806, BA 1810) may have been the result of church patronage rather than family circumstances. He was ordained deacon (1810) and priest (1811) and was variously curate at a number of parishes in Gloucestershire--Todenham (1810), Lemington (1811), Chedworth (1812), Yanworth Chapel near Cheltenham (1812-18) (all Gloucestershire)--before settling in Oxfordshire where he was curate at Bodicote Chapel, Adderbury with Milton (1818-34), and stipendiary curate at Compton Abdale from 1834. He does not appear to have married but the 1851 census records a son, Thomas Upton Nutt, who was originally baptised at Chedworth on 23 Apr. 1818, as Thomas Upton Terry, indicating perhaps that he was a natural child from a liaison, the details of which may never be known. Thomas Nutt appears to have acknowledged him in a later baptism at Bodicote in 1831 and may even have done so earlier in Chedworth. His son became a surgeon and practised in Southam, Warwickshire. Thomas Nutt’s death was widely but incorrectly reported as occurring on 24 Jan. 1853. In fact he died at his son’s house in Southam on 24 Dec. 1852 and was buried on 31 Dec. The Writings of a Person in Obscurity (1806) collects his verse in English, Latin, and Greek with his own translations, and prose 1796-1806, with the preface signed from Quay Street, Newport, where his sister Sophia died in 1850. He dedicated the work to Brownlow North (1741-1820), Bishop of Winchester.
