Author: Nugent, Henry

Biography:

NUGENT, Henry (1790- 1814)

The only information available about Nugent is contained in the posthumous volume of his poem The Orphans of Wyoming, which was prepared for publication by "his only friend," and includes a memoir and a letter about poetry. According to the friend, Nugent was born in London but his affluent family was cheated of their fortune and obliged to emigrate to Pennsylvania (where the Wyoming massacre of 1778 took place). Disappointed in love, Nugent moved to Washington DC where after a second disappointment he used a dagger to commit suicide. HJ
