Biography:

NORTHMORE, Thomas (1766-1851: ODNB)

The eldest son of Elizabeth (Osgood) and Thomas Northmore of Cleve House, Devon, he was born in Fulham and baptized in London. After graduating from Cambridge in 1789, he went to live permanently at Cleve House. From his first marriage, to Penelope Welby (d 1792), he had one son; with his second wife, Emmeline Eden, he had ten more children. Northmore's interests ranged from literature and science to politics; he was a member of the Society of Antiquaries and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Though unsuccessful in two attempts to seek election, he published a few papers on experiments with gases and on various inventions. His breakthrough came with his geological excavations, starting in the 1820s, and with the discovery and analysis of fossil remains in Kent's Cavern at Torquay. He died at Furzebrooke House, near Axminster. (ODNB 17 May 2020)
