Biography:
NELLIGAN, James (c. 1748-1835: ancestry.co.uk)
His surname is more usually spelled Neligan but it appears as Nelligan on his one book of verse. He was one of two sons born to the Rev. Michael Neligan of Granard, County Longford, and his wife Hester West. He studied at Trinity College Dublin, earning his BA in 1773, and he was ordained but no record has been found. His death notice states that he was connected with the Established Church in Ireland for seventy years, of which he spent fifty in Ballina, County Sligo, where he was rector of Kilmacteige. His wife’s first names were Mary Ann but it is not known when they were married. Possibly they had a son James or possibly Nelligan remarried after Mary Ann’s death in 1807; newspapers carry the birth announcement for a daughter of the Rev. James Nelligan of Kilmacteigue in 1833. He died in Ballina on 1 June 1835, aged eighty-eight. His other publications are A Sermon Preached in the Church of Ardnaree (1798) and The Bible in Miniature (1803).
